Highlights of Braga, Portugal

The north of Portugal has many wonderful places to visit, and one of the most famous ones is the city of Braga. The European youth capital of 2012 has a lot to offer, from cultural sights to a vibrant nightlife. Braga should definitely be among the cities you visit in Portugal.

The old town of Braga portrays amazing sights. As you walk around the charming streets of the city center you should make a stop at one of the many cafés in the area. A good one is called Brasiliana, the café is positioned at the heart of the city center and offers a wide range of options to drink and eat. After you take in the Roman inspired architecture and relax at one of the cafés you must try some of the amazing Portuguese cuisine. And be advised, you can never go wrong with fish.

Praça da República is another place you should visit. Also in the city center and at the heart of Braga, the square is absolutely beautiful. When have had enough of the square just go straight down. You’ll be walking down Avenida da Liberdade, a wide street surrounded by colorful flowers. On each side of the street you’ll find theaters, stores and shopping malls to cater to any need.

At night you should head to Rua dos Bares, a street that starts right by Universidade do Minho, the biggest university of Braga. The street is crowded with people and offers many bars and nightclubs. Just be warned that in Portugal people usually go out very late. Young people would go to a bar at midnight and drink until late hours until they actually get to a dance club.

The city is actually one of the oldest Christian cities in the world. The Santuário do Bom Jesus do Monte is one of the most famous monasteries in the country. The building was built overlooking the city and at great heights. In order to visit it you must climb to the top, and as you go you’ll gaze at many sculptures depicting biblical stories, which makes the climbing worth every second. When you reach the top you’ll finally see the monastery and take another look at the breathtaking city of Braga.

Braga is one tough city to beat when it comes to tourism. Just check it out for yourself. You’ll be amazed at how many things you will find to do in such a small city.
