One of the most famous music festivals in Portugal, and in the world, is Rock in Rio. The festival bears the name of Rio de Janeiro, the city of its first edition, but now Rock in Rio travels around the world bringing good music to all ears. The music festival, held in Lisbon, brings huge names of pop and rock music to Portugal’s capital. In the past bands such as Maroon 5 and Foster the People were in the line-up.

Optimus Primavera Sound, held in a beautiful park in the city of Porto, is a wonderful option for independent music lovers. The festival has a very hippie feel to it and can be a great experience even for those that don’t know many of the bands playing. Happening in a huge park called Parque da Cidade, you will have yourself a great experience combining nature and music. Fashion wise the festival will also catch you eye, people dress very comfortably. In the past bands like The xx and Kings of Convenience were in the line-up of the music festival

There’s also Optimus Alive, a more rock and electro oriented music festival. Here, the indie feel is replaced by the beat of the drums and powerful vocals. This year, the festival will be in Lisbon on July 9, 10 and 11. Optimus Alive will count with names like Sam Smith, Disclosure and Muse.

Lastly, there’s Super Bock Super Rock. The festival portrays huge names of rock music and is also held in the city of Lisbon. This year the festival will be in July 16, 17 and 18. A few of the bands already confirmed are Blur, Sting and Florence and the Machine.

Overall, most music festivals will happen during the summer, which comprises May through July, but if you feel like enjoying your favorite singer or band as a standalone act you won’t be disappointed. Many concerts happen through the year in Portugal, just be sure to keep an eye for them.
